And while on the subject of the Bay of Islands International (light tackle) Yellowtail tournament – a number of teams from WDSAC took part in this great tournament this year and two of them were on the podium to receive trophies:-

  • Stu Smith fishing on “Conchita” stepped up to take out the “Old Guys Did It” trophy

    Nice One Guys!!

Tutukaka Light Tackle Yellowtail Kingfish Tournament
Postponed from the scheduled Queen’s Birthday weekend due to the “ugly” weather, the Tutukaka Light Tackle Yellowtail Kingfish tournament was keenly contested on Saturday and Sunday 23rd & 24th June by some 7 teams.  Once again competition was intense with reputations to maintain and uphold!  Patience was sorely tested on Saturday with only 3 Yellowtail landed but a more successful day Sunday saw 5 landed and 3 tagged.
While Regan Cooper boated a beauty Kingy weighing in at 22.34kg (a pinfish no less!), it was landed on 10kg line so unfortunately did not earn him enough points to feature in the prizes.  It was the legendary and ever young Patron of our Club Stu Smith on “Conchita” who landed a fine 17.96kg Yellowtail on 6kg line earning him 1048.33 points and the Tutukaka Coast Electronics Shield for the “Full member with the Most Points for a Single Fish” and second place for “Angler Most Points overall” – Well done Stu!  Second place in the “Most Points for a Single Fish” section went to Dylan Pullman on “Tribal”” with another fine fish on 6kg line tipping the scales at 16.66kg.
The prize for the “Angler most Tagged Yellowtail” went to Dylan Christie on “Marlure” with two tagged and released Kingfish.
A massive effort by Josh Brandso on “Phat Tinny” landing two Yellowtail weighing in at 16.64kg and 16.3kg on 6kg line saw him earn 1763.38 points to take out the WATCO Plumbing Trophy for the “Full member gaining Most Points overall” and earned his team on “Phat Tinny” the coveted Conchita Trophy for the “Team with the Most Points overall”.
Well Done to the new reigning champions “Phat Tinny” – Skipper Jared Ridling, Josh Brandso and Dan Marsland – and Well Done to all of the teams for taking on the Light Tackle challenge!
