WOW !! What a start to the 2019 Whangarei Deep Sea Anglers Club’s tournament season! A grand total of 75 Junior and Small Fry anglers joined the Arthurs Emporium Tutukaka Junior Tournament on 12th & 13th January.  Once again providing a great incentive for the kids to get out there and give fishing a go, our ever generous Sponsors Arthurs Emporium put up not one but two iPhone8 plus Cellphones and a Quad bike!!

And did the Kids show us all how it’s done – with new records galore and an awesome overall tally of 5 tagged Yellowtail Kingfish, 15 tagged Shark (including 1 Bronzewhaler, 3 Blue and 11 Mako Shark), 6 Shortbill Spearfish, 2 landed Striped Marlin, 2 tagged Striped Marlin and 2 landed Blue Marlin.  Not to mention the “drops” and the Fish that unfortunately did not qualify for the tournament

In the tagged Yellowtail section (for Small Fry Anglers only) second place was shared between Kye Mackinnon fishing on Tribal and Dylan Bot on “TNT” each with one tagged Yellowtail but it was Alexis Pulham fishing with Dad on Tutu Iti who took out first place with 3 tagged Kingis – an excellent weekends fishing for 8 year old “Lexi” who has been a member of our Club since the day she was born!!

First place in the Heaviest Marlin section went to a mighty Blue Marlin landed by Madison Ross fishing on GPS – a pending Junior Club, NZ and World record fish no less!!  Madison’s fish, landed on just 15kg line, weighed in at 302kg.  A mighty fish and a mighty effort by 16 year old Madison who of course took home the second iPhone8 plus for the Junior angler most points in the Marlin section and was deservedly awarded the Barbara & Fred Cotterill Trophy for the most meritorious catch!!

Once again this year, a very special Fishing Rod kindly donated by Offshore Custom Sportfishing Rods, was awarded by way of a lucky draw.  It was a very happy Junior Angler Craig Scott who stepped up to receive this amazing Rod and Reel – many thanks to Graham and Dianne Case.
